Recently I made a commitment to myself.  I promised that I would practice the
piano for at least 1 hour a day.  Musically speaking, I feel that practicing the
piano will help me in many ways.  My 1 hour practice regimen is pretty simple;
mainly major scales and relative modes, followed by harmonic minor scales.

When I was a teenager I would practice for at least 6 hours a day.  But in
those days I had few responsibilities and much more time on my hands.
These days I have to balance many responsibilities and "find" time to
practice.  But even when I do find the time I must be careful to remember that
my family comes first.

Last night, while I was busy practicing, my son walked up to me and handed
me a book.  He wanted me to read to him.  Instead of telling him that I was
busy, I picked him up and read the book to him.  When I was done I set him
down and he happily walked away.

I feel that my commitment to practicing the piano is important.  Practicing
helps me to become a better musician.  But the commitment that I have made
to my son supersedes all others.  I am a father in the first place.  I must be
here for my son no matter what.  I must support him.  I must love him.  I must
read to him when he asks me to.  And while practicing is important to me, it is
not nearly as important as my fatherhood responsibilities.
