| As you know, I do not watch broadcast television. But on Sunday night, my family and I were visiting my Aunt Caldonia and her husband Richard. Richard and I were spending most of the time backing up my computer files in an attempt to free up some space on my computer's hard drive. My hard drive only has about 535 Mega Bites of free space left! Anyway, my Aunt had the TV on in the other room. The Oscars award show was on and after a while I heard my wife say, "I'm glad Lenon is not in here to see this." Upon hearing this, I quietly walked into the living room. When I looked at the television I saw that there was a rap group called 3-6 Mafia performing a song titled, "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp". I was utterly appalled and disgusted by what I heard and saw. The lyrics applauded the pimp lifestyle. The dancers romped around the stage with violent gestures. What is even more troubling to me is that the person singing the main theme, "It's hard out here for a pimp" was a woman! So what is a pimp anyway? A pimp is a male who physically, emotionally, and or verbally persuades a women to sale her body to other men in exchange for money. That money is then "managed" by the pimp. So how is it that a song that glamorises the pimp lifestyle, is "allowed" to be performed at the Oscars award show? Furthermore, how is it that this same song "manages" to win an Oscar? There are two points that I would like to bring to light at this time. But before I illuminate these points let me make one thing very clear: I do not believe in the classification, and therefore separation, of the human species based upon the foolish notion of race. |
