It is interesting how music comes to me.  I have written countless songs.
When I say songs, I mean to say compositions complete with melodies, chord
changes, lyrics, and rhythm.  But rarely do all of these elements come all at
once.  For me there is a common process.  It goes a little something like this:

1.  A Melody begins to play in my head.  I can be doing anything when it
arrives.  I can be driving in the car, walking through the house, sitting at the
keyboard, or even sleeping.

2.  I begin to hear sparse lyrics that follow the melodic line.  These initial lyrics
are important because they inform me about what the message of the song
will inevitably be.

3. The Melody becomes clearer and more defined.  Usually a secondary
melody presents itself, giving the first indications of song form.

4.  A basic background rhythm begins to emerge within my head.  The rhythm
usually coincides with the overall theme of the composition.

5.  At this point the A and B section melodies are clear to me, after which the
harmonic structure is further defined and enhanced.

6.  I take time to expand the lyrics, organize the harmonic structure, and
develop further the rhythmical aspect of the song form.
